Fixing a dropped macbook pro ?

Hey guys ive got hold of a dropped last gen MBP, hope to fix it so i can use it myself.

How do i go about finding out why its broken ? the HDD has been replaced with a new one and my first thought is try an external monitor to test for screen breakage. Whats the next steps after that?

Thanks i could really do with getting it working as i dont currently have a laptop : /
 
hey guys issue seems to be that a question mark on a folder flashes when booted, the new HDD hasnt has an OS put on it so i assume thats the cause so im going to install osx or attempt to and after that should the poc be fine since it powers on and screen has signal ?
