Basically it barely works and my warrenty has expired. I don't mind following the ifixit guide but is it worth doing it just to clean underneath the home button? I assume its just got some dust under it because it used to work fine or would it be worth buying a replacement button.

I've been having the same issue with the home button on my iPhone 4. Seems to have started after the last software update. Is there a chance that it is a software issue, or is it just coincidence?

Definitely not a software issue. Have you guys tried taking it to the Apple store? You might get lucky and get a replacement, even out of warranty.

If you happen to have the iOS 5 beta, for now, if you want a workaround, go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn AssistiveTouch on.

I'm having to press it multiple times just to get the multitasking bar to show up - sometimes it just takes me to spotlight.

Try using a vacuum to suck out any dust underneath it. It worked great on my iphone
