Just fixed a 2009 Unibody Macbook magsafe cable with the internal metal mesh exposed. It's working fine, however it overheats in the area where Sugru is applied. Sugru support says that perhaps I should use a smaller portion of Sugru, so it could dissipate heat easier. Now I don't remember if the junction of the cable with the charger originally produced more heat than the rest of the cable/charger, but I think this was not the case. It blatantly overheats more in the area where there is Sugru.
Don't know what the original cable cover has to block heat or perhaps the original coating makes heat dissipate more uniformly along the cable. Here is a picture of my fix:
