flash drive slows down my mac

Hi, For the last several months, when ever I put a flash drive in my macbookpro, the fans jump to around 4000 rpms, and a process in activity monitor shows up called MassStorage, it takes up around 140% of the CPU and slows the computer down. This has also happens on an older imac g4. Lately I have just been quitting it, is that going to cause any problems. Any answers to why this is happens and a way to stop it would be great.

Is it happening with a variety of different drives, from different manufacturers?

Its happening with sandisk sd cards and imation flash drives.
