flash drive wont eject & cant shut down

I think my problem started when i couldn't eject my card reader, then later a separate flash drive...said it was in use. I just pulled them.

Computer won't shut down now, I just get the spinning disk icon.

I've repaired and verified disk permissions and that didn't seem to work.

Help please!

Did you force power down by holding power button for 5 seconds?

yes, that worked. but then won't shut down properly
