After reading about HTML5 in another thread regarding a flash trojan I thought that I'd try and go flash free on my Macbook (nothing to do with the flash trojan, just interested to see how much I needed Flash)

I uninstalled Flash and clicked the 'Join HTML5 trial' link on Youtube and was distinctly unimpressed.
Black video boxes telling me that I need to download the latest Flash player:confused:
Am I missing something?
I don't have any extensions installed in Safari, do I need one for HTML5?

One thing I noticed is that my browser (Safari) speeded up quite significantly so now I'm quite keen to give this a go.
Any Flash free pointers appreciated.

Thanks.

Try Click to flash it's a plugin for safari that blocks flash and you can click on a flash to load it if you really need it.

Thanks for the reply but it's not the direction I'm looking at.
Click to flash will block flash but it's still loaded.

What I'm trying to do is get rid of flash altogether with the minimal amount of disruption to my browsing experience.

Gruber had an article on daringfireball.net about this last fall: http://daringfireball.net/2010/11/flash_free_and_cheating_with_google_chrome

He recommends the youtube5 extension in that article for flash-free viewing of YouTube and other videos.

Many thanks for the link, much appreciated and interesting reading.

How do I install an extension that isn't downloaded via the Safari Extensions page?

Do I just drag it into the Extensions box in Preferences?

To install the YouTube5 extension, just go to http://www.verticalforest.com/youtube5-extension/ and click the download link. After the extension is downloaded, double-click on the YouTube5.safariextz file in your downloads window to install it.

Thanks for the help.

Flash is gone and I'm on my way.........:)
