Hello everyone. I've had my HD4890 for long enough and was thinking its time to upgrade. But I've got a number of questions to ask the knowledgeable people here before I make up my mind.
Background: I have a flashed Sapphire HD4890 new edition on a MP1,1. The 10.6.4 update ruined the drivers in OSX, and I've had to manually restore certain files from version 10.6.3 whenever I updated, but that only worked until 10.6.6. Any version more than that and it doesn't work. Other than that, the card gives bootscreen through the DVI output and the HDMI only works through Windows.
So onto the questions. Since the time I went through all this, I've heard many people with flashed cards not needing to tweak anything in the OS itself because their cards are originally supported. I've even heard about cards that don't need to be flashed to work, but then you get no bootscreen.
1) On cards that give no bootscreen, can you still get a bootscreen with refit or chameleon?
2) Will chameleon run non-flashed pc cards with all their outputs working? (e.g. HDMI) And if it will, doesn't that make it superior t0 flashing?
3) I'm thinking about the HD5870, if I flashed it would I need OS tweaks aswell to get 3d/dvd? If not, are there chances that this could break with future updates, demanding a software hack?
And one side question about the MP1,1: From my understanding, for a 2 GPUs setup you have to use x8 for each card. On PCI 2, x16 and x8 have negligible difference, but given that this is only PCI 1 capable, does x8 equals to x4 on a PCI 2? If that's the case, that pretty much means one can't crossfire cards on an early MP.
Thnx for reading!
