Well I've just bought a new hard drive cause my old one broke and when I turn it on it has a flashing folder/question mark help me

You need to install Mac OS on the hard drive before it will work. Do you have the install DVD's around or (if you have a newer Mac) can you do the Internet restore?

How old is your Macbook? If it is 2010+, you can hold command-r while booting and get to recovery. From there format the drive to Mac OS Extended and then install the OS.
