Ok. So, less than 24 hours after I received my MacBook via FedEx, burgulars broke into my house and swiped it--before I could get renters insurance, Back To My Mac, or any 3rd party software to protect it, of course. If you have any ideas on how I can track it down, I'd be appreciative, but for now it looks like the best I can do is what I've already done--alert the police and apple care with the serial #, file a claim through my credit card, and start the grieving process
Oh, and plot my revenge for when I buy a new laptop.
Which brings me to real question...
I've been looking into Lojack and Undercover so that the MOMENT I buy a new one, I can pounce into action. But in doing my homework, I'm finding some serious room for concern with both of them. Lojack's website explains that it works by installing into "The BIOS"; however, apple is not listed as a supported manufacturer on their website. In which case, is the program still impervious to hard-drive swaps and reformatting? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears not. Also, it appears they have a cool "remote deletion" function to protect your confidential stuff--BUT if you have that feature turned on, you can't claim any of the $1000 "support guarantee". LAME.
Undercover seems to work based on the principle that it cannot be uninstalled if you are using firmware password protection; however when I look into that on apple's support page, there are a billion red flags that indicate that using the firmware password wreaks havoc on the computer. Also, if you're one of those people who DON'T get their computer retrieved through their service, they only reimburse you the value of the software! Seriously?!
Anyways, am I understanding all this info correctly? Any advice for something that WORKS, and works well, no ifs ands or buts?
