Flipboard today updated its iOS app to version 3.0, bringing a refreshed design along with a number of new features for gathering and consuming content. The app now allows users to choose from over 30,000 topics to follow, with each topic containing stories from publishers, websites, and magazines curated on Flipboard. The service is also launching an in-app section called The Daily Edition, which is delivered to users at 7 a.m. daily and features articles that are picked by Flipboard's staff.

With over 30,000 topics now available, your Flipboard can be as unique as you are. Topics range from "action hero" to "zoology" (and everything in-between), and you can find them via search or by tapping on the new topic tags on articles. Press "follow" every time you want to add something (or someone) to your Flipboard and watch as your experience becomes tailored to your life.

Want to catch up on the news in a fast, definitive way? Meet The Daily Edition, a carefully curated roundup of top headlines in news, business, tech, sports and culture, along with some fun elements, like a daily track and a Parting GIF to send you off on your day with a smile.
Flipboard's version 2.0 update last year included the ability to collect and save content into "magazines" and support for notifications. Flipboard is a free app for iOS devices and can be downloaded through the App Store. [Direct Link]

Talk about targeting the consumer. Whereas Verizon in another article is looking to plant permanent cookies, this software gets your full array of tastes and preferences from the git- go.

I prefer Pulse. Seems I can see more in one screen which is what I want to be able to do using Pulse. With Flipboard, not so much.

Still sticking to Circa! They introduced similar features too when iOS8 first came out .

I was hoping for an NC Widget that displays the latest posts on a magazine.

i wish zite stayed independent, i've been using that app more than any other since it debuted and its a much more enjoyable experience vs flipboard, even with the new design

I guess Zite will be killed soon since in the acquisition announcement it said that Zite will continue to operate for 6 months.

Agreed. But sooner or later someone has to die and its always the good guy first.

Anyone who's used this, is it a worthy Zite replacement? Out of every app I have, zite is my favorite. My news feed is so perfectly curated, I'm not sure any other app can even slightly compare.

I've tried old flipboard and I just can't get into it because I have to tap each individual subject to see articles about it. I love just seeing an already curated mix of content I have the choice to skip or read through.

Every other news app out there just doesn't even come close to Zite. Circa is fine, but it doesn't curate, so it's only a good "current events" reader. It never sends articles that aren't necessarily new to the web, just new to me that I may enjoy reading.

I was expecting the same thing, some new iOS8 features, but with the release of version 3 and the features that are in this new update, I can totally understand how they didn't have time to build in those new iOS 8 features. Maybe in version 3.1?

This update is... Better? But oh man it's got nothing on site! What clipboard and other aggregators seem to not understand is the reading experience. I don't want fancy 3d rendered page flips, I want quick, easily readable access to many sources automagically curated to my tastes - just like Zite! I've spent more time in Zite than probably all my other apps combined. This update to Flipboard isn't gonna change it sadly... :(

After using the app a bit, I think I'll grow to like it in place of Zite (mostly because when Zite shuts down I won't have a choice).

The 3d rendered page flips are a nice touch when browsing content, but I really don't like them when reading the content itself. I think it makes more sense to just scroll through the article, and flip through to the article you want. Best of both worlds.

Other than that, it's basically just Zite with lots of features I likely won't use and a different UI.

A daily curation of key news is exactly what intrigues me about this update.
Daily editions of news in any sort of medium make it the perfect bookmark so to speak to quickly glance at the bits that are relevant now and then, because the last thing I want to do is scroll through days, sometimes weeks of old news in an endless feed with many redundant headlines.
When I grab my iPad in the morning to check news I want a quick glance at what's going on, much like I used to do it with newspapers, just in this case without having to deal with paper and a subscription fee.

This is excellent.

To anyone that is using several of these types of apps. i'm looking for one to handle all my news stuff. I tried Flipboard but it was lacking in a couple of key features. I have sent the suggestions to Flipboard but they seem to like saying 'great idea' and then ignorning you.

so what my ideal would be

*UI perhaps similar to Flipboard cause i like the whole flipping pages thing, or give me something as easy to move through. Paper by Facebook also isnt horrid on the UI department
*user editing of source lists. so say there is a Tech section and it has a site that is all Android news. Well i dont give a flip about that so let me take it out. let me also add the tech sites i do care about
*user creation of topics.
*support for including RSS, twitter feeds including mentions, twitter lists, individual facebook pages or profiles etc. and mixed together in a topic. so say I create an Apple topic and i want to have this site, AI, etc as well as the twitter feeds for Tim Cook etc and a google alert or 12 on various Apple keywords as well as an internal service service on the same. and with that the ability to parse out dupes if they arrive via several different systems. Kind of like how Facebook will show all the folks in your friends that shared a link in a bunch rather than showing the same thing several times
*ability to favorite things for reviewing later, perhaps even in collections that can be made public like Flipboard does their Magazines.

anyone found anything like this. cause im game to try other things.
