The new unibody Macbook Pro 15" has gotten me to thinking how easy it would be to make my work supplied computer in to my after hours machine. I used to boot of an external drive with my work IT guys approval so I could get around not having administrator rights on my old Macbook Pro. That way I could change preferences, and install software without disturbing his IT universe. I get that they don't want us installing software that would cause problems with the network at work.
Oddly we now have network access for anyone using their work ID and password on any personal laptop. We also have a public Wifi. I assume now IT simply doesn't want to be responsible for a work machine that people screw up.
After watching a video on the MacbookPro 15 unibody I think I could easily swap out the IT governed drive for my own drive. MobileMe and IMAP would help me keep the two drives in sych. But I actually don't think I'd really need to have the official HD in the machine much.
One issue. In order to make my personal HD I would need the system disk of course. I assume an off the shelf retail copy for this unibody would not work with this knew machine. I suppose if the IT guy went for this he'd allow for the OS install on the second drive.
Any thoughts?
