Hi guys my father inlaw has an ipad and in the floods that have just hit us in Queensland Australia his house went under in the flood with his ipad in it.
Is there any way that it can be fixed to work again or to retreive the photos that are on it?
Any help would be great.

Sorry to hear about your situation, but there probably isn't much you can do for the device as there are built-in sensors to detect water damage (among other things) so Apple knows to deny your warranty claim. The best bet for the future would be to buy a fireproof, waterproof safe and store sensitive electronic devices in there while they are not in use.

The iPad is probably ruined beyond any repair, but stranger things have happened.

However, since the iPad cannot take any pictures (yet), any photos on the iPad should have been synced from somewhere on a computer, right?
Backed up somewhere?

Perhaps the photos were imported using the camera connection kit... if the iPad had been synced with a mac they could have been transferred but then again in the face of the kind of natural disaster that has hit Queensland, even that sort of backup might not help.

Good point about the connection kit
And yes, the backup might be lost too
Just trying to find a ray of light

Thanx guys for trying to help. Unforunately the computer and all connections have drowned.
We have sent apple an email asking if there is some sort of recovery place we can send it off too.
Thanx again everyone.

It may be a bit of an extreme flooding, but have you tried the bag of rice trick for like a week?
