So whats been happening in here since MacMan45 and Costabunny went to ground so many years ago?
Jeff (MacMan45) and I are still happily married and loving it. He is such a sweetie, and a proper gentleman. He is also one of the bravest and strongest men I have ever met: Coping with me for a wife is a very hard journey to navigate. I have meltdowns and suffer General and Social anxiety, depression, Aspergers (High Functioning Austism), Complex Stress focused PTSD, Schiermanns (a weakening/curvature of the Spine) as a child, Arthritis (Right Knee, possible hips), Extreme Sciatica in my lower spine,
Severe Asthma not helped by having ones lung bisected and the upper lobe donated to medical science, all for daring to have a rare form of cancer slowly growing in it).
How he manages all that and the crazy that is me, is beyond my comprehension. See many Aspies have a thing, mine is to be a complete nerd, computer science geek and Always a bit lost without some little project to keep my mind wheels turning, whether it is helping a new student grasp the subtleties of the intricacies of programming a complex algorithm to calculate a companies TAX exposure or simply a set of logical steps to have the computer display the time and date.
Anyways, you are in this section only to hear what I have to say regarding our beloved cMP’s; so lets get down dirty.
Having been mac-less for three or more years I was getting itchy mitts. It seems that fate once again poked its hooter into my life, without such as a by your leave!? Just after reading about Red Dead Redemption II coming for the PC this November; I began plotting how best to rid myself of the now only a simple 4k blu-ray player (XBox One S in White 500GHHDD), when an old mate chirped up on FBork Messenger to ask if I had an XBos for sale!!! Holy cow man. I said that I had one but was about to list it on Macrumors to get an old mac of some kind (mini, imac, cMP, it didn’t matter as my eager modder mitts were twitching already). Yes he says, I have an old quad core you can have. It a bit stock and not a high model. Straight swap I said?, Why not says he.
So that is how I once again have a cMP 5.1
It was ‘only’ a dual-Quad core Nehalem 2.26GHZ 2009 4.1 model, with 6GB (6x1GB ECC 1066GHz) and an AMD 5770. Only has two bloody drive sleds as well
Anyways after messing about a bit, I have it as a 5.1 2010 quite happily running 10.13. I had a 120GB Kingston in my media server PC Along with the 4TB WD RED disk. Both were re-purposed and then adding a 500gb HDD back to the old PC (a Ryzen 3 1200 3.1GHz with 8GB DDR4), added an only NVidia GT230 1024Kb and installed Linux.
Sold the old PC for a quick bargain of £150 cash, which was rapidly ‘borrowed’ by my baby sister, Hamida, whom is staying with Jeff and I until she gets back on her feet. To be honest I hope she is here in late November as Jeff is going in for Spinal surgery and I am rather terrified to be truthful. My sister will be a big help because I too have a weak lumbar spine and there are so many tasks you all may take for granted, I simply cannot do. It is a bore to say the
I Bought a nice adapter and happy it is. Had to buy a Logitech KB/Rat wireless combo. I would love to get my mitts on one of those full size wireless Apple keyboards and magic mouse 2(3?). Only the price is somewhat scary so I may well see what people have, and what they wan.
I would like to find a bluetooth/wifi module for it and a couple of drive sleds.
I am definitely going to spend a few bucks on Infinix 2R4 4GB ECC 1333GHz 1.35v Ram at 8 sticks to give a useful 32GB Ram
I will be putting in a Startech PCIe->NVMe card that supports boot. I see no point in adding USB3 (yet).
I am definitely going to drop a pair of Hex cores in (probably just 3.06GHz ones as it saves me £100 on the 3.46), I am not building a gaming machine anyways as thats what my i7, RTX2080Ti, Water Cooled, NVMe Whoosher super PC is for. Both machines are sharing my 4k monitor for now. Cannot decide if I should swap my Acer Predator 4k GSync with my Benq PD3200U as even tho its a 1440P, it does have a built in USB KVM so I could both computer systems easily from my Corsair K70 RGB RAPID FIRE V2.0 Gaming Keyboard and My Corsair M65 Pro RGB Optical FPS Gaming mouse, without having yet another box of cables. I look forward to teaching all that I know to Tom.
I just want a wickedly fast Mac Pro for my amateur photography, and maybe for some design work. I am for sure going to start writing thanks to that shady S King fellow, that I hope to locate Mr King in Derry.hiih
Hopefully within the year i will have my dream:
Mac Pro 5.1
1TB Boot `nvme in PCIe slot
MSI AMD RX5500 8GB DDR6
32GB ECC 1333Mhz Memory
Twin Hex Cores 3.46GHz
USB 3 Card with power supply
Apple full size magic keyboard UK Black
Apple Magic Mouse 2 Black
2 more Drive Sleds and I hate untidiness
