Flying home an imac help

i'm a college student moving home and wanted to fly my imac home as opposed to shipping it. problem is my computer in it's original box is too big to carry on the plane. i was thinking about checking it but was worried about rough handling. does anyone have advice on getting my computer home safely?

Ship it and insure it.

And make a backup copy of your HD and carry that on the plane with you.
