So I recently re-installed a fresh copy of SL on my 3,1 MBP. Everything was working fine until last night when I started getting that annoying (ta-chick) noise.
Used SMART utility to check the load cycle count and its slightly over 600k, works out to roughly 100 per hour(...)
I preemptively ordered a Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb drive(which I had been meaning to do), but the question is this:
-Is it just the age of the drive?(roughly 1.5 years)
-Is it something outdated?(firmware etc)
-Or is it about to fail?
Last question: When I do receive the 7200rpm drive, can I install that recent firmware update for 7200rpm drives, or is that only for newer(uni-body) style MBPs?
*http://support.apple.com/downloads/Hard_Drive_Firmware_Update_2_0* update I'm talking about
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer my questions, I'm going nuts listening to my drive click every few seconds.
Further reading makes it look like this is common with Mac/Linux...should I count on having to buy a new drive roughly every year?
