Well at least I think it's the fn key that's causing everything I type/edit to override the letters in front of the cursor. HELP! I hit the fn key because I thought it functioned like an insert key. Nothing happens when I strike the fn key.

I cannot edit my document with the cursor overrriding everything I've typed previously.

I have a full size aluminum mac keyboard.

That would probably be the 'insert' key you accidentally pressed instead of the function key.

Go ahead give it a try, it's usually above the arrow keys on the keyboard, in the top left.

On the new aluminum keyboards?

There is no "insert" key.

Above the arrows I have (from top to bottome):
f13, f14, f15
fn, home, page up
delete, end, page down

How do you disengage overtype?

I Found It!

Oh thank God! I was near panic mode...

Apparently the fn key needs to be deactivated inside of Word. At the bottom there is a green button next to OVR (override). I toggled that light off and the problem was fixed.

Ah ok, I had a look at a full sized alu keyboard and saw the 'fn' key is right where my insert key is on my (somewhat dated) keyboard. At least the solution was still the same. :)
