Folder and file names shaded grey

All folder and file names in finder are shaded grey. (not greyed out-they are still accessible)
The same for lists in 1Password. Clicking on a file name changes it to a hard to read box. Deleating com.apple .preferences .finder.plist eliminates the issue but it comes back in no time. Anybody?

The next thing I would try is logging in under a different User Account. If you don't have a troubleshooting User Account, you can create one. Just go to the Accounts pane in System Preferences.

If the problem does not show up in that account, it will be far easier to migrate to a new account (search for the process on Apple's support page) than to figure out what is going wrong in your current User Account.
