Folder upon startup of 10.6?

Hello, I am receiving a error upon starting up my Mac. I am getting a folder with a question mark upon startup. Anyone know what is going on or where i can take my Mac in Southern New Jersey. Thanks.

It may look like this, as the Mac can't seem to find a proper bootable Mac OS X.

Ahh, Ok, I was thinking that the machine actually booted and he was getting an arrow from something that had been accidentally dragged into spotlight and then deleted.

Hold the option key at startup and in the options that come-up reselect your System as your boot volume.
