Does anyone see why Apple included folders in iTunes 5? I remember people talking about it a few months ago, that it would be a useful feature that somehow related to smart playlists, but i don't understand.

They seem to be exactly the same as playlists... a list of songs, but with a folder icon instead of a playlist icon. How is this an improvement?

You can put playlists in the folders. So you can choose just the playlist, or the folder with all of the songs of several play lists. This also helps organize and clean up your list of playlists.

you put your playlists into the folders so similar/like playlists can be grouped together. for example you could have a folder for all your smart playlists, one for all the different 'mood' playlists (happy music, etc whatever) this is imo one of the best things about the update.
