All the conversations about using mac the ripper to download dvd's onto the hard drive seem to center on licensed dvd's.

Does it also work for dvd's made from a dvd recorder?

I'll just throw all of my questions out there and keep my fingers crossed that someone can point me in the right direction.

My VCR died a while back and I've decided it's time to get a DVD recorder to replace it. It occurred to me that this might be a good time to think about all the video things I'd like to do above and beyond watching rented porn (kidding).

Here's what I'd like to do...

1) Record a nightly cable news program.
2) Download the recording to my computer.
3) Edit the video, add music, titles, etc.
4) Upload that video to youtube.

How do I do this?

Are dvd recording encrypted? Do I need mac the ripper? Am I only missing a dvd recorder to make all of this happen (I have a 2-month old 17" iMac)?

This is a hobby, not a profession, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with the minimum investment.

Step 1: Secure proper licensing from the program's copyright holders. Don't forget to mention that you intend to alter/edit their program.

Post back once you've obtained licensing.

I understand that ignorance of the law is not an acceptable justification for acting outside it, but you might want to begin with that lack of knowledge as your starting point rather than immediately putting on your copyright nazi hat.

“Post back once you’ve obtained licensing” ?!?! Chill out. Nothing I wrote demanded that tone.

Explaining the general consensus for legitimate versus illegitimate behavior is, in the long run, much more effective than being pompous and dismissive.

Mate, skip some steps and get yourself an EyeTV. It'll be better quality, quicker and easier. Having said that, MacThe Ripper should be able to rip from home-made DVDs with no problem. Handbrake will do it with conversion too, which might come in handy.

As for the legal aspect, I dunno about other countried but I don't reckon you should edit news shows and repost them on YouTube. Maybe just keep them on your hard drive. :)
