I have an old version of Canon Image Browser which worked fine in El Cap, but in Sierra if I try to view an image full size, it says it needs to download the Osaka font (which I dismiss).
I have always been dubious about font downloads, as in the past I know they where a source for problems.

Is it safe to download this from the Apple fonts panel within OSX, Osaka is listed there but is ghosted out with a download option at the top.

Thanks in advance.

This is a known problem with older WebKit APIs. macOS Sierra doesn't have all the fonts preinstalled anymore to save space. It will show that prompt once you need a particular font.

If you want to be sure, you can also download individual fonts with Font Book. I have no reason to assume that this will be causing any problems.
