okay a certain someone has a problem with fonts on thier mac. they are using adobe photoshop 5.5 (oldschool), quark, freehand.. etc. etc.... and when you pull down the font list in each program and select a certain font it comes out (on the screen) with the font right above the one you selected. why is it doing this? that certain someone indicated that they were using photoshop 4 fine with no font issue but when they upgraded to 5 this crap started happening.
any ideas?

So the Photoshop update broke the functionality of in all the other programs as well? Wierd.

Could be a bad font...how many fonts are installed on the machine? If it's not too many, you could check them one at a time to see if removing one of them fixes the problem.

too many fonts?

Old versions of photoshop? I assume the computer in question is running Mac OS 9 or earlier. There is a limit to the number of fonts that you can put in the fonts folder. I think the limit is 128 total fonts.

Another option is that Mac OS 9 made a bunch of software incompatible. ATM was one of them. If the computer started having problems after an upgrade to Mac OS 9, then there might be some incompatible software on the computer.

I like the idea above about a corrupt font. Try taking out the first half of the fonts and restarting. If that fixes the problem then one of those removed fonts is probably corrupt. If not, try it with the other half. Keep doing this with smaller and smaller chunks of fonts until you isolate the offending font. This strategy beats doing it one font at a time! It works for extension conflicts, too.
