OK, so I'd been chugging along in Classic on my G4 for many years, particularly since a change of career meant that graphic design became a hobby-that-occasionally-pays rather than a profession. However, the opportunity to get a good deal on a shiny new iMac and a knock-down price on a second hand copy of CS3 meant that I finally bit the bullet and joined the OSX generation back in the summer.

Of course, there were a few sacrifices along the way - my venerable CalComp graphics tablet had to finally be retired (given that it wasn't actually supposed to work with OS9 either, I can't really grumble) and a number of second-string apps had to be let go.

One of these was Fontographer. I inherited a full version many years ago from an employer who went all-Windows and was literally putting all the old Macs and any software disks in a skip. I must admit, I never created a complete typeface in Fontographer, but I did tweak a lot of fonts with it, adding missing characters, correcting ugly kern pairs, sometimes even creating extra-bold versions, and so on.

I know that the app is still available, but I can't justify $349 on a piece of software of which I'm going to use about 10% of the total features. Can any of the wise heads recommend anything as an alternative, based on experience?

I note that Fontlab's own TypeTool at $99 might well do the trick, but it's still $99, which is a fair amount of cash to lay out on something I'm only likely to use a handful of times each year, in a non-professional capacity.

Advice much appreciated.
