Font use question

I have a font in my library folder that I have no idea where it came from. It's MAXIMO by Fontographer 1996. Present owners of Fontographer do not recognize it on their site. I love it and want to use it for a publication. After extensive research on line, I find that others have been trying to find this font for years on font finding sites, with no success other than identifying it by name. I am willing to purchase it needed. I may have even had it in OS9 after trying out fontographer, and converted it over. Since it seems to not exist any more (other Maximo fonts do but not this one), is it save to use it?
