fonts not available

I installed a bunch of .ttf fonts on osx, they all show up in Font Book, but when I open applications like Flash MX and Word they don't show up in the available font lists... any idea what could be the problem

the funny thing is that after installing one of these fonts I was able to use it in Flash movie, but then when I tried to open it a week later it told me the font was not available, I don't think I did anything in the mean time to cause that problem
 
ok I figured it out, I noticed some ttf fonts were available, the ones that started with letters closer to A, which made me think there were too many ttf fonts (I had like 3500!) so I just deleted all fonts from Library/Fonts and replaced only the ones I need, the rest are in another folder for when I actually need them
