The other day I was helping my friend restore his iPhone and I just had some questions about stuff that happened during the process.

He was using an iPhone 4 (not the 4S). I believe he was using 5.1.0

1. His iPhone was stuck in a boot loop in recovery mode (from a failed firmware update to 5.1.1). I was trying to recover all the information from his phone, so I booted into DFU and tried jailbreaking it using redsn0w so that I could ssh into and take files off. Redsn0w acted as it usually did, until the point where it says "the rest of the process will take place on your device". Well it didn't finish the jailbreak, but it seemed to roll back the firmware to the previous firmware and everything worked properly. At this point, we just backed up his iPhone and updated it to 5.1.1. I was just curious if anyone knew why it rolled back the driver, etc.

2. His iTunes did not recognize that his phone was in recovery mode (Windows 7) but my Macbook Pro did. Is this common?

thx
