Its unclear if you need to buy the $50 MagSafe case and the $40 Magsafe charger for Magsafe charging to work. Or can I just buy the Magsafe charger by itself?

I agree it’s not unclear, but this was also a very unhelpful reply to the OP to whom it was unclear.

OP; No you don’t need the case. Apple promoted the fact that it ALSO works through the case, but it works perfectly fine on the bare 12 as well

But will it work through other third party cases as well?

That I cannot answer. The case will have to have its magnets in the right way and for things like charge passthrough it will need to be able to conduct the charge through to the iPhone - Apple will very likely require that for MagSafe MFI certification but there will undoubtably be 3rd party cases that won't work right with more than just the case

MagSafe is integral with the iPhone. Each item is an option you can choose or not as you like. But you don’t need the case to use charger, etc.

It appears each additional part comes with its own MagSafe to layer another on it also.

What I'm confused about is why the cases have MagSafe included since it's already in the phone. Any idea why? It makes the clear case look kinda funny.

That’s how the pass through works. So that you can put the case on the phone and the charger on the case and it will charge the phone - or the little wallet thing. Otherwise you couldn’t stack things. You could only have the case

exactly.
you couldn't safely stack items otherwise... but I wouldn't doubt someone make a one item case forgoing additional items for vanity. time will tell.

Just received my iPhone 12 Pro. It seems that the magsafe doesn't charge much whilst connected to the mac. It's too slow and if I use the phone whilst it's connected it goes down...
