I've seen discussion here regarding the obvious impediments to using Windows or Windows-based apps on M1 hardware.

People have speculated that when VMWare and Parallels release they will be hypervisor based virtualisation only, i.e. will only allow you to run other OSs compiled for ARM. These companies must realise that their primary customers are Mac users seeking to run the plethora of x64 Windows apps. Releasing software which only runs Windows ARM with it's complete dearth of software or Linux ARM would kill the product financially.

My belief is that they will target x64 emulation with some form of para virtualisation/direct hardware access to get Windows x64 running. Think along the lines of QEMU.

I also think that there will be more focus on high level API translation using WINE to get specific software running.

Thoughts?

You're right that Windows 10 ARM compatibility is bordering on useless. That said, Fusion is a side project for VMware. Fusion profit is probably a rounding error on their 10-K. I wouldn't be shocked if they kill it.

Wine needs the x86 (Intel) CPU to run x86 windows apps.
So it’s in the same boat as virtualisation.
Emulation is possible though, and those will come sooner or later, just like they existed back in the PPC days.

I usually just buy an extra WinPc machine for that software (usually scientific software ... used VM Ware on an 2008 iMac with a lot of success) but not worth the hassle nowadays. Machines are cheap.
