I'm having a really hard time deciding between a magic keyboard with touch id or... going with a black mechanical keyboard...

This is stupid, but honestly I just want the "smaller" magic keyboard with touch id in black... I hate the long numpad magic keyboards and I refuse to use it... If only Apple made the magic keyboard in black in smaller form...

Anyways, so now I'm considering a mechnical keyboard just so I can have a black keyboard... For those that live without a touch ID keyboard, do you miss it?

What can you even do with a touch id anyways...? besides unlocking computer and fast passwords ofc...

I love Touch ID. I do not love the magic keyboard with numbers. I’m thinking of getting this In jet black.

I also hope Apple will release a non-extended keyboard with black keys.

I agree.

I feel like Apple is trying to force people to buy the more expansive keyboard with numpads by enticing them with black color. But in reality I think they're only pushing people to buy non-apple keyboards more because the unnatural key travel (of the arrow keys) and more difficult to carry form factor is a deal killer. I would never have considered a black mechanical keyboard if only they had non-numpad touch id keyboards in black.

right now sticking with the razor huntsman.... if only apple had lighted keys for the cost of the board...

I hardly use it, yet its on keyboard that came with 24" iMac. I guess it depends on how often you need to do something that requites access to your keychain, or admin access.

Its also on the M1 Max laptop I use but once again, hardly use during most activities.

Touch ID has been of more value where the interface is harder to enter keystrokes such as on a iPad where you can swipe for access. I have a slightly older Magic keyboard without it. I don't think its important enough unless the applications or work processes use admin access frequently IMHO.

That I like, The M1 Max MBP I use has a keyboard that you can set the brightness an it automatically enables by touch and automatically turns off if no longer used for a set time. A wireless keyboard that provide that would be very useful at times.

I have not tried the newest Apple keyboards, but I cannot give up my CODE keyboard even though I really enjoy TouchID.

I have a Keychron Q1 mechanical keyboard and wouldn’t give it up. I wear an Apple Watch, so I can double tap the side button instead of using TouchID for many situations where TouchID would otherwise be used.

I just wish they would let 3rd parties create touch id keyboards.... I want Touch ID, but will not give up my MX Blue switches.
Agreed — seems like they could create a certification program to allow third parties to implement it.

When I’m on my phone touch/faceID is a godsend when I’m out and about for passwords and apple wallet.

On my macbook in more public settings I appreciate it.

At home in my office occasionally it’s nice to reach over and use my 14” touchID but the other half the time I’m in clamshell mode and have 0 problems typing out my system password. Security is just not an issue at home. Never really felt the need for touchID for my external keyboard and recently made the move to the Logitech mechanical and love it.

I have a fantastic buckling spring model M keyboard on my work PC but I won't change from the full size magic keyboard with numeric keypad and Touch ID on my Mac. I love the clacky mechanical keyboard will full movement on the windows computer but it just wouldn't feel right using it on my Mac. Plus I don't want to lose Touch ID.

But a good mechanical keyboard is oh, so nice.

Then again, I wear an Apple Watch which effectively replaces TouchID for the Mac with a double tap of the side button (as long as the watch is unlocked and on your wrist), so not having TouchID on my keyboard is not an issue for me.
