While restoring in iTunes is what Apple Support is currently recommending, here is what I did to fix the 8.0.1 issue I had. I had the 8.0.1 firmware installed on my phone this morning (unfortunately), and I was super pissed because I didn't want to have to restore my phone then restore an iCloud backup which would take hours to configure overall after adjusting all my settings, relogging into everything, etc.
So here's what I did...
Downloaded the 8.0 firmware (all models found here):

Once I had that downloaded, plugged in my iPhone to computer, Option-Click CHECK FOR UPDATE (NOT RESTORE), then select the new 8.0 firmware you just downloaded. I didn't have to put my phone into restore mode or anything, the install was treated as an upgrade from 8.0.1 > 8.0 , thank god.
I know this has already been said in the comments on the article regarding this situation as I learned it from there, but just thought I'd bring this fix to the attention of the iPhone forum so it can help everyone out.
FYI, I have a Verizon iPhone 6 64GB just to give you guys an idea
