I finally went to the Apple Store to see the watches. I used to live in Apple Store mecca, AKA the Bay Area, in fact my last Cali address was Cupertino, and I was within 20 minutes of about 8 Apple Stores. I now live in northern Arizona, and the closest Apple Store is one of the Phoenix cluster, North Scottsdale, 100 miles away.

I felt for the poor Apple employee, whose job has been reduced to wrapping watches around peoples' wrists while explaining mostly the policies as opposed to the features. Reminded me of the old days when people sat in front of you and slipped your feet into shoes, like we were all Cinderella. (I know that still happens, but not anywhere near as often.) Even though my new zip code doesn't rank Edition watches to try on, they were on display. The gold is beautiful, and if I had 'that sort of life', I would fancy the one with the red leather band. (Note: If I had 'that sort of life' I would feel self conscious about the fact that I had 17K on my wrist. If I had that extra spend, there are many other things I would do with it.)

This visit was rather perfunctory, as my watch is due to be delivered tomorrow, the lowly 38mm Sport with the white band (I am still in the same time zone as Apple (at least during this time of the year), so no heroic effort was required to get my order in at 12:10am). I do think the stainless is more attractive (I do like shiny (Shane in Jimmy Neutron, anyone?), but aluminum is close, and I was very concerned about the weight on my wrist as I am the sort who feels things (yes, my clothes have all tags removed and what is up with zippers on shirts?), so I opted for the lightest possible (the difference for me would be 25gms vs. 40gms). But that band is WHITE. And it is WIDE. Why on earth do the bands have to be so wide? Most watches have bands that taper somewhat. I may exchange it for the black. Or add the black, which is what Apple is counting on. Ca-ching! BTW, most people probably figured it out long before I did but the blue/pink/green are the same shades as the poly iPad/iPhone covers. The blue and the brown leather Watch bands match the leather covers. If you care about that sort of thing.

Sharpest looking? Black stainless with the matching link bracelet. I think both the black stainless and the steel grey aluminum are going to be top sellers, despite the black stainless having a ridiculous price differential.

Any of the bands can be added to the Sport watch, but since the non-sport bands' insert is stainless, there will be mismatch of color. I thought it might look kinda cool, but swapping bands is a no no during the appointment.

My bold predictions ;)
#1 Sport steel grey 42mm, black band
#2 Sport aluminum 38mm, black band, then white band
#3 Stainless sport 42mm,
#4 Stainless sport black 42mm
#5 Stainless sport 38mm
Stainless watches will be a mix of black sport bands and link bracelets for men, and link bracelets and classic buckles for women, with some Milanese loops thrown in by the statement makers.

Now, could we please get on to delivering a retina display larger than 15" and smaller than 27"? Thank you, Apple.
