Force document sync with latest iCloud version?

Is it possible to force my Mac to sync/download the latest version of a document before opening it?

Sometimes when I have edited a document on my iMac, and want to open it later on my MacBook Pro, it is not always the latest version. It seems like there is no "latest version check" on my MacBook Pro even though it has optimized storage turned on. Anyone know how to fix?
