Force iTunes NOT to update

I have a macbook with an 80gb hard drive. As a result, I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive and a 30gb iPod. When the external drive is plugged in iTunes automatically updates my iPod which is fine.

However, If i have my iPod plugged into my MacBook WITHOUT the external hard drive, I cannot open iTunes because it will crash when it attempts to update.

Is there a way to force iTunes not to update (like holding command when you open iTunes)? I don't want to manually manage my music if i can help it.
