Honestly, I don't think Apple ran it by focus groups at all. I think the engineers asked Jonah Ive what to call it and he was like "**** it, call it force touch, I don't care."

What would you call it? Hard press? Strong Touch? Force click?

I think the main thing is that it was designed as an Apple Watch interaction first, hence "touch". Though I kind of like "Force Tap" better.

On the Mac force click probably makes more sense, because you would then have left click, right click and force click.

You are right. I never thought about it. But now that you mention it. Force touch is a TERRIBLE name. I mean iPad was bad. But now force touch? What is this? Some sort of twisted thinking.

"Please tell us what the man did"
"Well, he was watching a video of how the butterfly is better than the scissoring keys and then force touched it to go faster and faster and didn't stop until it ended"

what's the problem. It sounds Perfectly normal.

I think it's just you, literally the first time I've heard someone say it was "twisted thinking"...you might be projecting a bit.

How about just... revolutionary new trackpad technology...yada yada yada "insert new features"...done.

Come up with a trademarked name that doesn't piss off or offend somebody and you too can be a marketing genius.

There's maybe 8-10 posts that agree with you and Apple will still sell millions of laptops to those who will never give the name a second thought - I'm one of those who'll never give it another thought.

Because they need a name to refer to it on different units, and as a promotional name. Quite simple actually.

Actually no. One can assume that every other Mac that comes out after this point will have this FTP. The name is simply retarded. Just know that someone who gets paid more than all of us came up with the idea to give it such a stupid name. The person must have just finished watching Star Wars.

Would you prefer "Vibrotouch" or "Vibropad"? Maybe "Apple Touch"? :p

Honestly, its fine. A bit awkward, but certainly not worse than "retina" or "Thunderbolt".

Actually yes. Even while all Macs might end up with it, it still makes a difference when comparing Mac to Windows PCs, iPad to other Tablets, iPhones to other phones.

And you because geeks think Star Wars when hearing the word "force", doesn't mean the majority of people on the planet doesn't refer the word to something real.

Darth Vader once said
"Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force"

or a force touch?

Taptic Touch sounds nicer to me.

"New Macbook with Taptic Touch Trackpad"

Maybe its the star wars fan in me, but to be honest, I don't mind the name.

Remember the ridicule and derision when apple announced their new tablet - the iPad. This especially in comparison to that, is nothing.

The problem with that name is that it describes the technology, but not the new action that it provides (pressing harder than a normal click.)

Really
