Force/Trick MBP into thinking external monitor is plugged in?

I thought it would be a lot easier to find a solution for this or that someone has already thought of it

I want to use my ipad as a secondary monitor for my mbp and I'm thinking if I somehow forced my mac to think a monitor was plugged in I could just go VNC from the ipad and voila secondary monitor, right?

I could just download air display... but I guess I'm being stubborn and dont want to download two clients to do something that sounds so simple

Any thoughts?
