Force zoom in safari?

I have a 27" iMac.

When I browse the web I always hit cmd and + to zoom 3 times so I can read the text.

is there a way to force this? I have to do it every time I open safari and every time I open a new tab

Have you tried changing the default point sizes of the fonts (safari > preferences > appearance) ?

Yes, it looks horrible. It only increases the text size. The text rendering is fubar too, a text line actually over writes the text above it.
