I have a few older apps that serve a unique purpose and for which a replacement is impossible to find.

Is there any sort of an emulator that can be used to run PowerPC apps in Lion?

The only way to get PPC apps running in Lion is by using a Snow Leopard/Leopard virtual machine. There is no other way.

No, there isn't an emulator that would actually work. PearPC emulates a PPC processor but it's too unstable/slow to be of any real use at this point. Emulating a PPC processor isn't enough to get OS X to install either. You can get OS 9 to emulate well using SheepShaver, but I doubt that would help you very much.
