format external drive from Fat32 to NTFS?

I need to transfer large file from my mac to PC all the time. I would like to know if i change my external drive to ntfs format can i still read/write on the external drive on mac and will it remove the 4gb limit?

Reformatting is possible via Windows, and it will delete all data on it, thus make sure to back the HDD up before formatting it.
And the following should help you understand NTFS and other file systems, but maybe have a look at exFAT.

• To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
• Maximum file size: 8EiB
• Maximum volume size: 8EiB

exFAT (FAT64)

• Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
• Not all Windows versions support exFAT. See disadvantages.
• exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
• AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
• Maximum file size: 16 EiB
• Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
