Format External HD

I am trying to format a new Maxtor OneTouch to OSX Journaled and it is not working.
I want to hook this drive up to my AEBS to use as a network disk.
Do I even NEED to re-format it?
It's in MS-DOS fat.

FAT32 will be fine and will work.

Using HFS+ is only required until you want POSTIX permissions, which are required for running Applications.
