Format iMac w/disc from external cd drive

Hi everyone!!
I have an G5 iMac with Mac OsX and my cd drive is no longer working, and applecare expired. So i bought a sony external cd drive.
My question would be: Is it possible to format my entire HD from this external Cd drive, or which would be my best option.
I´d appreciate any comment in regards of this issue

Normally PPC Macs don't boot easily from external devices connected via USB.
If you already have the items at your disposal, you can always try via connecting the USB optical disk drive (ODD) to your Mac, inserting the install/restore CD/DVD into it and starting the Mac and holding down the OPTION key right after startup to see, if the ODD shows up.
