Just bought a new WD ext. drive. It came with "Smartware". Should I use theirs or Disk Utilities?

No, don't install any of that WD software. If you only plan to use the disk with Macs, just use Disk Utility to format it to Mac OS Extended.
Avoid.....
to any cost install any that comes with your drive. Old and faithful Disk utility can help you and more. In some instances, the WD comes preformatted so you are doing right checking and reformatting the drive before use.
