Formatting a MicroSD in Mac OS Extended?

hey guys,

looking to buy a microsd card and one of those mini usb adapter so i could increase my storage space by 32gb. My question is, is there any benefits of formatting the card in mac os x extended? This is strictly going to be for my air so i won't be hot swapping the card with camera/phones/etc.

I'm guessing the other format is FAT32. The benefits include: holding files bigger than 4Gb, journal support, Time Machine support, and some other Mac OS X only things.

It will likely be more stable than any other format, without the file size limitation of FAT32, without the need for 3rd party software like NTFS and with the backup capabilities lacking in exFAT.


FAT32 (File Allocation Table)

• Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.

NTFS (Windows NT File System)

• Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
• Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X

• Some have reported problems using Tuxera (approx $36).
• Some have had good results with Paragon (approx $20)

• Maximum file size: 16 TB
• Maximum volume size: 256TB

HFS+ (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended)

• Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
• Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.

• Maximum file size: 8EiB

exFAT (FAT64)

• Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
• Not all Windows versions support exFAT. See disadvantages.
• exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
• AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
• Maximum file size: 16 EiB
• Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
