Formatting External USB HD

Hi,

I ran into problems a couple of years ago when I tried to format an external USB hard disk using my MacBook. Somehow I managed to get it formatted but I remember it being a painful process.

I've recently bought a new MacBook. I was wondering whether the problem formatting external USB HDs still exists or whether it has been resolved?

It's very simple process with Disk Utility. Do you just want to erase it or what?

From memory, Disk Utility refused to format the disk. There's a discussion of the problem here:

The reason I'm interested is because Mac-formatted drives seem to be about 50% more expensive than Win-formatted drives.

I've never had any issues with Disk Utility. That was in Leopard, I'm sure it has been fixed. There are other apps as well, for example iPartition.
