Welcome to the Fortnightly Challenge Topic Thread

The purpose of the Fortnightly Challenge is to help photographers of all skill levels improve and evolve in their photography. Anyone who is willing to take a photo or offer a comment is welcome to participate.

About the Topic Thread:

• This is a collaborative topic thread to be posted every six weeks. Participants will suggest and discuss topics, and a poll at the end will determine which three are the most popular. Those three will constitute the next topic schedule. Any forum member may post a new topic thread upon seeing that the current schedule of topics is about to run out. The last week of the running Challenge is a good time to do this. That will allow plenty of time for discussion.

• Topics on the schedule will appear in succession as active Challenge threads for two weeks (one fortnight) per topic. Any forum member may post the new fortnightly challenge thread once the current one has expired.

• Topics should be general enough to apply to at the wide range of photography talent on the MR Digital Photography forum. Keep them as open to creative interpretation as possible.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all, it's time to discuss new topics for the Fortnightly Challenge. It might be interesting to base some of the topics off generally accepted rules of composition. Below is a list of what I have been able to gather together after a Web search:

Composition Guidelines
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Balancing Elements
  • Leading Lines
  • Symmetry and Patterns
  • Viewpoint
  • Background Depth
  • Cropping
  • Framing
  • Experimentation
  • Simplicity
  • Texture

We could alternate a rule with a creative topic to keep things from feeling too much like school. Post your opinions on this and add your suggestions for creative topics as well. This would be one entry in the poll called Composition Guidelines
.

My creative topic suggestions:

Black & White

Geometry in Action (Geometric shapes in Nature or man-made things)

The next Challenge starts October 30.

I like the idea of alternating rules and topics as you have suggested. I also like the "geometry in action" suggestion. In addition to B&W how about "flash effects" (creative use of on or off flash photos)?

I like the idea for the flash effects too. I've been playing around with an off-camera flash a bit, and would love to see what others have done.

Thanks for the early input. It would be nice to gather a few more creative based ideas. We could just go with mostly composition guidelines, but if we had five ideas we could go with something like this:

Rule of Thirds
Flash Photography
Balancing Elements

Leading Lines
Geometry in Action
Symmetry and Patterns

and so on. Two more ideas from users would give enough to finish this.

Ideas?

What about "Context," something where a photo would be strange without an explanation. Also, if it hasn't been done already, what about "Weather?"

composition rules (I don't like that word, but it's hard to get away from)
Is composition guidelines better? They're things to follow for help, but not strict rules.

Thanks for the idea. I edited my earlier posts to "Composition Guidelines"

Hi, again. We need to have something set for Challenges starting on the 29th. The users replying here seem to be OK with the idea of a structure based on composition guidelines supplemented with creative breaks. I'm not really sure we need to go with the usual poll for this since 11 topics are fixed and the extra ones suggested number 5. This will yield the following extended groups of Challenges:

  • Rule of Thirds: October 29 - November 11
  • Black and White: November 12 - 25
  • Balancing Elements: November 26 - December 9

  • Leading Lines: December 10 - 24
  • Flash Effects: December 25 - January 7 (2012)
  • Symmetry and Patterns: January 8 - January 21

  • Viewpoint: January 22 - February 4
  • Geometry in Action: February 5 - 19
  • Background Depth: February 20 - March 4

  • Cropping: March 5 - 18
  • Weather: March 19 - April 1
  • Framing: April 2 - 15

  • Simplicity: April 16 - 29
  • Context: April 30 - May 13
  • Texture: May 14 - 27
  • Experimentation: May 28 - June 10
