Epic Games has announced that it plans to bring hugely popular multiplayer game Fortnite Battle Royale to iOS devices in the near future.

The acclaimed free-to-play title is coming to both iPhones and iPads and will be the "same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac," with identical content and regular updates that match the console and PC versions.

In partnership with our friends at Sony, Fortnite Battle Royale will support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android. This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together.

We believe this is the future of games. The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want.
Starting Monday, March 12, interested gamers can sign up for an iOS Invite Event at the official Fortnite website. Email invites will be sent out to all signees, who will receive an email with a link to download the game from the App Store. People who receive invites from Epic will also get friend invite codes to share with others.

Participation requirements include an internet connection, iOS 11, and at least an iPhone 6S/SE, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, or iPad 2017. Invites operate on a first come, first serve basis, but Epic says it will be adding more players over the coming months.

This is one of those games I just didn't understand at all. Played 20 matches (xbox), didn't die, won every one of them. To me it was extremely easy so I moved on. Nice to see it make its way to a mobile platform, obviously there is an audience for it... I'm just not one of them.

Lmao, lies. There is no way you won 20 games in a row, especially your FIRST 20 games.

It's only the most played game on any system last month, pretty sure there are more than just an audience for it..

You played Save the World, by yourself... otherwise if you had done that in Battle Royale, you would be an internet celebrity with your own pet lion and a video about how cool your crib is. Probably having a movie deal made out of you, tv series and 2-3 books written + countless tv models thrown at your feet...

GOOD JOB though!!

Not as much of a gamer as I was 20 years ago, but this game kills it. The cross-play nature of the game just makes it so easy to get everyone onboard.

The phrase Cannon Fodder comes to mind.

My son wholeheartedly agrees with you!
[doublepost=1520636898][/doublepost]My son is very much looking forward to this for his iPad. He plays the Xbox version and I’m hoping his account stats carries from device to device.

It should. You link your accounts on your Epic Games account, which allows that to work. I started playing on the PC, and then was able to pick up from there on PS4, with everything available on both platforms. I suspect that this iOS version will will sync your progress from your Epic Games account once you login to that account in the iOS game, just like it does when you login within the game on PS4. (I haven’t tried XBone or Mac yet.)

I thought this was another Steam-required game. If so, how do iPads and iPhones figure into that Steam platform?

And one other inquiry: for OSX, does it support Metal?

No, not Steam. Epic Games made their own app ... Epic Games Launcher (EGL,) much like Steam, EA’s Origin, Ubisoft’s UPlay, etc. Fortnite is installed with EGL. You can also use it to install various builds of Unreal Engine dev kit, Unreal Tournament, and a couple other games they’ve released to support EGL.

Fortnite on MacOS actually requires Metal (macOS Sierra or newer.) So, for those with a system that isn’t supported with Metal, they won’t be able to run Fortnite.

Metal requirements are:

Metal
Supported by the following Mac models:
  • MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Also, as an update to my earlier post, cross-platform progression sync is not supported on Xbone (Microsoft restriction.) So, for those hoping for the ability to sync their progression on Xbone with the upcoming iOS version, don’t hold your breath. Hiwever, unless Apple has something that will restrict such syncing, I suspect that it will work for iOS<->macOS and iOS<->PC, and probably iOS<->PS4. PC<->macOS works (tested this myself a couple hours ago.

Thanks for this info, good to know. The reason I had assumed it was just another Steam game was because the Fortnite website kept mentioning an "Early Access" program. Uhhh….. we all know that the words "Early Access" is something that is associated with Steam for years.

I'm glad to hear about the Metal support. I'll give this game a try eventually…. but I generally don't like paying for Early Access betas. I'd try it as a more polished "release version" whenever that happens.

The Battle Royale mode (PvP) is free to play. I tried that just to test out the hardware support before I spent anything for the other mode. Save the World mode (Co-Op PvE) is currently paid, but will be free to play once it’s complete and out of early access. Epic currently states that Save the World mode will be released to free to play status sometime in 2018.

This belongs on reddit, if you never died, show us proof. It will show how many games you won, enemies killed, and more.
