forward and back on alu keyboard

Ive just swapped my white keyboard for the alu one. Its much nicer for me.

I thought on my last one that in safari the back and forward buttons next to the in and delete (above arrow selection keys) would just move back and forward in the browser? It seems you need to click cmd and the button now, which is a bit strange because on its own it performs exactly the same thing as the up and down buttons next to it? So why is this the case?
