I've been wondering for some time. If somebody finds your item with AirTag attached, how are they to know they have to touch it against their phone (Especially if they aren't tech savvy)

I was hoping that when an Airtag in Lost Mode came into range of a person who found it's phone, they would receive a notification saying the Airtag is in lost mode, and here are the contact details for the owner.

I don’t think it would be giving out your contact details per se. Nor should it be bothering everyone who passes near it.

Think of a different way and probably that’s how it will be done

They won’t know. Until Airtags become well known they wouldn’t possible know they have to tap it. They can easily google airtag - because it’s written on the front what it is and then they would know.

When the AirTag is in lost mode you enter contact info so someone can call you. It doesn’t broadcast anything, however it will alert a user that has found it if they bring it home or travel with it and then the above will be set in motion.

I've not actually been able to get the touch functionality working on my iphone yet.. it works fine with the android phone I have though. Weird.

We have a four pack, split between two people, and my phone gives no indication of having been tapped against the other accounts airtag.

NFC antenna seems to be quite picky in iPhones - have to tap the tag with the centre of the top edge of the phone.

I can’t the touch functionality to work on an iPhone 8 Plus. No matter how much I try it never picks up that there is an AirTag.
