While digging through CompUSA's warehouse, I came upon an iMac G5 ("Ambient Light Sensor" model. 17" 1.8Ghz, etc.) Now obviously it was either a refurb or a return because the box was taped up, but still, at it's retail of $699 I'm tempted to get it.

Any yays or nays to this idea?

Sounds like a sweet deal to me.. if you have the extra cash it would definately be worth it.

It all depends on the condition it's in I suppose. I may get it for my parents to use.

Take it! Working at Office Depot it was fun to see how stupid people were when returning things. They probably returned it because they thought it was not the right color white.

man, i would be all over that.

iMacs have an ambient light sensor? What is that used for?
In revision B of the iMac G5, they added an "ALS" that detected the amount of light in the room, and then adjusting the power light status on the computer. This way, if it was dark, the power light's brightness would go down, and "both you and your computer can sleep peacefully." (I think that's how Apple put it)

Thats what I love about Apple. They don't overlook a thing and always manage to throw in a few extra surprises.

oh man, i wish my powerbook did that, i have to put a cloth over it every night to sleep :p

Most definetly buy it. Try to talk down the price some too. I use to work at compusa and open box items (especially ones sitting around as long as that one) can be talked down quite a bit. If you buy a lets say printer or wireless router and a few other little gadgets at the same time the manager will be even more likely to lower the price on an open box item (as long as what you are buying is not on sale for instant in store rebates).

Definitely, It can't hurt to ask your boss for 10%-20% off because of a damaged box or something. The best part about buying things like this is that you still get the full warranty. I bought a Floor model DVD surround sound dealy from target - it was originally $249 but I talked the guy down to $50. I took it home and the DVD drawer wouldn't open, so I took it to an electronics shop for service. It turns out that there was a CD stuck inside (CCR's Greatest hits) which means I got a great cd player and a nice surround system for $50 with full warranty.
