Hi all, I'm new here. We just discovered a brand-new in-the-box iMac Model #M5521. It's from 2000 and was called the "Summer edition," or something like that, I believe. The box is still sealed and was found stashed in the basement. The owner (family friend and collector of many things) passed away recently and his wife needs to sell what she can find of value.

I don't know if it's okay to ask this here, so I apologize if not. I'm trying to find a value for this computer and am wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, as I haven't been able to locate any info other than for used iMacs. I'd really love to get as much for this as possible for our friend's sake.

Thanks very much!

Hi! Vintage personal computers don't really have 'blue book' type collector values. It really depends on if there's a collector out there looking for a mint-condition example of that exact model / color to fill in their stash. There's a few, to be sure.

This page offers some good resources for estimating the resale value of a Mac. I would say use eBay's Sold Listings search to see what prices were realized for that particular model and then price it accordingly.

M5521 covers a lot of models, as with all things "schrodinger's cat", pictures or it didn't happen?

As a general rule, with these New World Mac's, sealed in the box, I would expect it to bring the original MSRP or better at auction. How much better largely depends on placement. That is to say how good the sale is promoted to bring in the "right buyers".

I don't want to come off as mercenary, but the topic itself is kind of mercenary in a way. I mean you want to maximize the value for a widow, and there is nothing wrong with that, it is a laudable enterprise.

While at the same time I don't want to speak ill of the dead, however, if this man had spent $799 buying Apple stock in summer 2000 and left those stock certificates in a box in the basement, what would that stock be worth today?

I mean we'd be talking $213k.

Not in anyone's wildest dreams is this iMac going to bring that today, not even 10% of that, and you'd be doing good to bring 1% of that off the sale today.

None of that is relevant, spilled milk and all, I only bring it up as an example of how bad an investment saving NIB tech is.?

Vintage NIB computers are a niche market, and vintage NIB Macs are a niche within that niche. However, we are still talking a niche market in a world with 8 billion people, not an inconsiderate number of whom are among the bourgeoisie.

The NIB value as a consideration of the premium value a collector would pay is something like you would expect in the art world as one might pay for a lithograph, while not an original piece of art, it is a very limited quantity, but consider the condition of the packaging and the fact that it is not signed.

While Jobs is dead, Ive and Woz are still alive, shouldn't be too hard to reach out to them to try and get the box signed, if you really want to maximize the value as art. Once the box is opened, all that art value is gone.

I think G3 iMacs are wonderful and having one sealed in the box is amazing. I think you could easily get $500.00 for it and would start an ad with that price and see where it leads. Without pictures though it's definitely harder to give you a better idea.

A Blueberry G3 new in box (based on an ebay search) sold for $4500.00 on 2/23/22. So...it's possible to get quite a lot from a computer that would now be limited mostly to local work. It would be great for OS 9 games!

I personally love PPC Macs and still have an iPhone 3GS that I use as an iPod and an actual iPod with the firewire connection.

Good luck with the sale!
