Four new MacBook models with M3-series chips are on schedule to launch next year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips have now reached design validation testing (DVT), meaning that the devices are nearing mass production. He believes that progress on the new machines indicates that they are likely to launch between early 2024 and the spring, which would mirror the approximate time frame in which the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pro models launched earlier this year.

New 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M3 chip have also apparently reached engineering verification testing (EVT), an earlier production testing phase on prototype devices. Gurman says this puts the next-generation MacBook Airs on schedule for launch between the spring and summer of next year at the earliest, which could also mirror the time frame of the current models' launches that took place at WWDC in June 2022 and 2023.

Any idea what type of screens we might see on the airs? Too much to hope for mini-LEG and pro-motion?

"design validation testing (DVT), meaning that the devices are nearing mass production." --> "to launch between early 2024 and the spring"

"engineering verification testing (EVT), an earlier production testing phase on prototype devices." --> "for launch between the spring and summer of next year at the earliest"

I would have thought that engineering verification testing would be a step further along the development pipeline than design verification testing?

Am I wrong?

So why is the release schedule sooner?

So the M3Pro/Max would be launched before the M3 ?
Highly unlikely.
WHo said that? Here only Gurman said the Mbp pro will come first compared to the Macbook Air
But the M3 first could come still in the mac mini and imac

In a perfect world…. That would make so much more sense than putting out the low end first and making it confusing for pros… like how many people bought a Mac mini M2 while waiting for the Mac Studio m2 as some of the specs were so close or better than the m1max

Fourteen? ;). I too bought a mini m2 Pro but am really happy with it.
It is easier to produce the non pro M chips and is part of the ramp up process. Artificially delaying using them until the all the Pro/Max chips are ready doesn't make sense either. Yes in a perfect world they would all be ready at the same time.

My dream is a a Macbook Mini which is the 12" Macbook returneth with an M chip and a sim card slot and a gorgeous screen
Now with the N3 node they can do it easily , it can be a binned M3 12" Macbook for thermals purpose
Since now, everybody that analysed the A17 pro thinks Apple with this new gen can work on the clock speeds based on the thermals envelope
So expect the M3 could be clocked higher than A17 pro, around 3.9-4Ghz and the M3 Max even higher at 4.5Ghz for the 16" Mbp envelope and so on...if the tech allows it maybe we can have in the future an M Ultra in the mac studio/mac pro clocked at 5ghz

Much later than I want them to be. Hope my laptop can hold out till then.

And really hope this gen comes with an upgrade to base RAM and or storage.
This timeframe was what I have suspected a while, I think my MBA 2018 will hold out ok til fall/autumn for a new purchase. I really hope so.
But pls Apple don’t prolong the wait longer then max fall-24 for the new M3 MBA's, where I think they will show up as time and rumors have come lately. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of those M3's MBA's.
For when did Apple release new Mac's in mid year? It's usually fall/autumn, and sometimes spring.

And yes, I hope RAM starts at 12GB too!

It is far more likely that the M3 series will first be released on the higher end machines, and not the Air or the Mini. Releasing it on the lower end machines first would result in a significant depression in the higher end sales (Pro).

The Air won't get an M3 until 2025.

I wondered the same thing. Here are some definitions I found on onlogic.com:
  • Engineering Validation Testing (EVT)
    • Component level validation to ensure the discrete parts of a project all function as expected. This can include specific circuits and any aspect of mechanical fitment.
  • Design Validation Testing (DVT)
    • Unit level validation to ensure that components of the system will work together effectively when combined. Full system validation will begin at this stage.
  • Production Validation Testing (PVT)
    • Full system level validation, assembly and regulatory testing to verify that the entire device functions as expected and can be manufactured at scale.
